Trailer Analysis Little Sunshine

The trailer begins with equilibrium phase where close up shot is used to introduce each character showing their importance in the film. Slow instrumental diegetic music in the background accompanied by setting shows a normal life of a family. The long shot shows the characters eating as a family this implies the genre is drama aimed at families, therefore, reaches a larger target audience.

“He tried to kill himself” this dialogue suggests the storyline consists of the topic depression and suicide, which conforms to the sub-genre of drama mental illness. The argument that breaks out during dinner hints to the audience the family is dysfunctional and there is tension.

To indicate a change in the narrative upbeats tempo of the non-diegetic music increases, which also implies the film is happy and cheerful. The disruption phase occurs when the little girl gets accepted into the pageant.
It then cuts to a long shot of a van driving leading to the recognition phase, to show aspect of humor little girl is left behind, which will appeal to the younger audience. Additionally, the trailer suggests the family will build a stronger relationship through the road trip. This will appeal to the target audience as it includes a heartfelt storyline about a family’s journey. Furthermore, it also conforms to genre drama, as plot consists of real-life situations, which audience can empathise with.

Montage of each character is shown alongside their real names. This is a unique selling point because the actress and actors encourage the audience to go and see the film.

Throughout the trailer audience are left with many unanswered questions for example:
-Does Olive win the title Little Miss Sunshine?
-Does Frank get out his first love?
-Will the family accept Frank’s homosexuality?
-Will the family resolve past feud?
