As a part of the advertisement to promote our trailer to the audience we need to create a poster. It’s important to recognise the themes and genre for our poster, therefore we listed key concepts in our trailer such as depression, anxiety, broken and lonely. I then began to research ideas using Pinterest to gather images, as inspiration for my own film poster. The photograph on the right strikes to me the most because I personally interpret it, as being lost in one's own thoughts. The image shows a girl physically drowning, which is an effective way signify the idea of an individual overthinking and getting engulfed in her own thoughts. Additionally, the effect used gives the image a dreamlike effect but equally showing pain and sorrow. All the images in my mood board use low lighting and cool tone colours, which convey mystery and enigmas.
The film poster for Moonlight is very creatively composed, as it indicates the narrative of the film. The image on the poster is divided into three sections, showing the different stages in the character life e.g. childhood, teenage and adulthood. To highlight the drama genre the colours blue and purple signifies emotions such as sorrow and despair. This links to the tagline “story of a lifetime”, clearly communicating to the audience the film consists of a coming of age story about a young boy. In compassion to other film posters, the poster layout is minimalistic and uncluttered with excessive movie quotes or movie credits. Therefore the modern typography title is clearly visible and effectively shows the main theme of the movie.
The layout of the poster for If I Stay is interesting and cleverly created, as it’s laid out in a collage. 5 of the 12 image forms the main protagonist, who addresses the audience directly. The other images imply the narrative of the film, which consists of young love, this is supported by the tagline “live for love”. However, due to the dark blue tone, it suggests their relationship is complicated and elaborate. Therefore conforming to the genre of the film drama/romance, as the colours such as blue connote heartache. Similarly, to the poster for Moonlight, it’s not cluttered with text, the title is very basic- all lower case and effective without overpowering the main image. Like most conventional movie posters the release date is featured in bold to emphasise it’s importance but doesn’t overpower the other text.
