Trailer Analysis : Mr Popper's Penguins



Aerial shot of a city is used to establish the setting of the film, accompanied by upbeat non-diegetic instrumental music creating a comical atmosphere. Equilibrium stage beings with Protagonist successful work life, conforming to stereotype type men are very career driven. Caption ‘hardest thing about having it all’ indicts to the audience protagonist had to make sacrifices in his personal life to live the lifestyle of a successful businessman.
Using a transition it cuts to a close-up shot of protagonist exaggerated facial expression, which indicts his wacky personality. Dialogue ‘I don’t want to go” suggests the male protagonist lacks in parenting skills, as his kids refuse to spend the weekend at his. This informs the audience the narrative will consist of protagonist slowly rebuilding relationships and becoming more parent-oriented. A long shot of protagonist getting hit in his gentiles with a ball conforms to generic convention slapstick comedy and also shows the film is family friendly.
The change in background music indicts disruption, which conforms to the Todorov narrative theory, creating tension and mystery. The wide angle camera shot of protagonist shows him staring out the window, symbolising he is at the peak of his life what could go wrong. Editing effect fade to black highlights the unexpected change in the trailer. It then quickly cuts to him dragging a box inside his apartment, raising curiosity in the audience mind about what’s inside.
The tempo of the non-diegetic music builds up and then drops when penguins are revealed this add a comedic aspect to the film, as it was unexpected. The scene swiping between the pest control and protagonist along with intense music highlights chaos, leading to flooding scene is the bathroom.
 “Penguins yes” this dialogue indicts that the penguins will help rekindle the relationship with the protagonist and his children; make him realise that he should be a better father to his kids-this is shown when he refuses to hand over the penguin to the zookeeper. Therefore leading to resolution phase where he accepts the penguins and bonds with his children and becomes a happy family. The trailer appeals to the target audience because it shows the emotional journey, which will persuade families to watch the film together. Also, Jim Carrey, who plays the main character, is a unique selling point as he is recognised and has large fan base thus attracting a wider audience.
