Tailer Analysis: Everything Everything

The trailer begins with the two film companies that produced and distributed the film i.e. Warners Bros and Metro Goldwyn Mayer. There’s a quick cut that transitions to a long shot of a modern house which establishes the location as the story is most likely to be based in this area. The medium shot presents the female character then her voice-over fades in with a non-diegetic piano sound that gives it a melancholy vibe. The narrative follows Todorov’s structure as there equilibrium in the beginning. There’s a series of quick introduction of the people that are close to her e.g. Mom and Nurse. The non-diegetic dialogue reveals that she has a weakness/disease that restricts her from going outside, this distrusts the story as it will create some future issues especially after the male interest is revealed. This follows the convention of a romance trailer so far as the audience can predict that the love interest will alter her choices.

There’s shot reverse shot of the two teens engaging in a text conversation, it’s highlighted by the pop up texts next to them. This is a creative way of displaying it to the audience as they can visually see. In the background, there’s a romantic music playing to imply that their relationship is going further as the male interest is initiating their conversation. The medium shot is in slow motion to enhance the romantic glances but the shot cuts to a close up of a stethoscope against her chest suggesting that her health isn’t at it's best which makes the audience realise the uncertainty of this love story. The dramatic voice-over and high angled medium shot emphasises the seriousness and suggests that there’s no improvements or cure.

The next cut reveals that the film is based on New York’s best selling novel so it may entice the audience because of the reviews. The film is aesthetically pleasing with long shots of romantic sceneries. However, there is disruption since their relationship can’t continue however the male protagonist makes the effort reach out to her. This is a typical convention as the male lead aids the ‘damsel in distress’.

Scene transitions to previous movies the studio has worked on e.g. Me before you and If I Stay to appeal to wider audience since they were received well by the viewers. There’s signs of repair as the long shot shows the two characters meeting each other for the first time. This film is likely to appeal to teens, particularly females as it’s a love story from a girl’s perspective thus can relate to issues like first love. The equilibrium is broken as she decides to come out of her comfort zone in order to live her life to the fullest instead of regrets. This makes the audience curious to see what will happen once she enters the outside world. There little montages of moments and memories then there’s a disruption to the narrative as the medium shot shows her going to the hospital. There a cliffhanger that encourages the audience to watch the film in order to find out if there’s a happy ending. It ends with a creative title of the film as it has doodles associating to the film then a final credits. There social media promotions to advertise and get the audience involved.
