Mood Board

This is a mood-board I created for our trailer. Each image I have chosen to include directly link to our film and is key to describing our trailer idea.

Quotes that indicate feelings of depression and sadness is significant, as our trailer is based around mental illness. In our trailer we will use text or voice overs to get the message across to the audience the protagonist suffers from depression. This links to the black and white image of a girl that appears to be lonely and empty feelings that will be experienced by our main character. This will involve physical and emotional struggles, linking to the image with variety of facial expressions.I want the audience to show similar facial expressions while watching our trailer.

The image of 3 girls represents the importance of friendship in our trailer, which is another key feature. However in our trailer we will shine a light on the dark side of friendships such as conflict to show it's not simple or easy to maintain. This links to the friendship quote included in my mood board ,which suggests it doesn't always last or can be rekindled. In our trailer the audience will be left with enigmas about outcome of the relationships between the characters.

I also included locations that will be prominent in our tailer such as neighbourhood, bedroom and the park. These location I feel are perfect for our film because it makes it realistic because the audience will be familiar with it, which is important as they can relate.

About Our Film

One Day is a drama film about a teenage girl called Belle Francis, who lost her best friend to depression. Since Layla passed away, Belle blames herself for everything she could have done to save her. She suffers from the guilt of not being there for Layla despite that she needed her most. There was a time when they used to be close, shared the entire good and bad situation in lives. However, things start to change as Layla diagnosed with depression. This has made it difficult for others to accept her flaws and insecurities when she was actually hard to be with. The death of Layla was something that caused Belle to realise that all Layla has really asked for is someone to listen to her.
Rose is a close friend of Belle and Layla. When Layla was still alive, they used to hang out together all time. However, after Layla passed away, they have developed a distance in their friendship. Rose recognised how Belle has changed into a completely different person. The smile on Belle's face gradually disappear and fills with undeniable guilt, the lively Belle is no longer presence in her current state.
In this film, Layla represents a person who suffers with depression and decided to end their lives because of that. Sometime she rather keeps her feelings to herself because it's difficult for someone else to understand. On the other hand, Belle represents a person who’s usually able to solve a problem with logical solutions rather with her feelings because that’s seemed to make more sense in her mind. Alternatively, she has missed the point to sense how Layla actually feel. For instance, when Layla told her that something bothered her and she was upset, Belle instantly interrupted her with solutions rather let her finish the story and comforts her with understanding feelings. Rose represents someone who's quietly caring.

Software Research

To achieve a high standard trailer the editing software used is vital. We have decided to use the same software to create our trailer as last years, as we are familiar with it already and understand how to use it effectively. This is an advantage because we can apply our knowledge from last year and also further develop them to create a successful trailer.

Adobe Premiere Pro CC running on OS X El Capitan

Adobe Premiere Pro Logo.svgLast year, we used the software Adobe Premiere Elements 10, to create our opening two minutes – Seen 11:59 PM. However, this year we will be using the software Adobe Premiere Elements 15, which is an updated version of the 10 with added features such as extra text styles, transitions etc. to give the footage a smoother and crisp finish. This software is ideal for making and creating professional looking videos and movies, as it provides a clear timeline with audio below to ensure the shots are aligned with the music. Additionally, it has the editing technique stabiliser, which will be useful to reduce shaky footage that is not wanted in our trailer.

Using, the layer based editing system it enables image creation and altering with multiple overlays that support transparency.  To create our film poster and magazine we will use Photoshop. The software has become the industry standard and is used by professionals. This, therefore, gives us a chance the experience how upcoming film posters; magazine is created and achieve success in the entertainment business.

Lighting

Lighting is an important technical element in the film, as it helps add atmosphere and meaning to a scene/shot. The most common lighting set up is the three-point lighting, which involves a key light, a backlight, and a Fill Light. This gives the illusion of a three-dimensional subject in a two-dimensional image that is accomplished using light and shadow.

The key light is the main light and its purpose is to put light on the subject. A common placement is at 45 degrees on either side of the camera and45 degree up from the subject. However, depending on the effect you're trying to achieve it you can experiment with the different placement of the light. The technique side lighting is where key light is placed one side of the subject, illuminating only half of the subject's face and eliminating the other side in the shadow. This technique helps signify conflict, which we will consider to use in our trailer to show the characters feelings.

Fill light function is to fill the light in the shadows caused by the key light. The fill light is usually softer and less bright than the key light. Using a high proportion of Fill light to key light creates liveliness atmosphere in the film, which is also known as High Key lighting. Alternatively, low proportion of fill light to key, known as low-key lighting, enhances the shadows and contrasts. This type of lighting is used in dramas to emphasise tension.
Depending on the situation a combination of High key and low-key lighting can be used.

Black lighting is placed behind a subject, separating them from the background in order to achieve a three-dimensional look.  The backlighting can be artificial or natural light. This can create a glowing effect on the edges of the subject to make the subject appear dreamlike.

Colours used in films are significant as it sets the tone and mood, evoking emotion from the viewers.
