Lighting is an important technical element in the film, as it helps add atmosphere and meaning to a scene/shot. The most common lighting set up is the three-point lighting, which involves a key light, a backlight, and a Fill Light. This gives the illusion of a three-dimensional subject in a two-dimensional image that is accomplished using light and shadow.
The key light is the main light and its purpose is to put light on the subject. A common placement is at 45 degrees on either side of the camera and45 degree up from the subject. However, depending on the effect you're trying to achieve it you can experiment with the different placement of the light. The technique side lighting is where key light is placed one side of the subject, illuminating only half of the subject's face and eliminating the other side in the shadow. This technique helps signify conflict, which we will consider to use in our trailer to show the characters feelings.
Fill light function is to fill the light in the shadows caused by the key light. The fill light is usually softer and less bright than the key light. Using a high proportion of Fill light to key light creates liveliness atmosphere in the film, which is also known as High Key lighting. Alternatively, low proportion of fill light to key, known as low-key lighting, enhances the shadows and contrasts. This type of lighting is used in dramas to emphasise tension.
Depending on the situation a combination of High key and low-key lighting can be used.
Black lighting is placed behind a subject, separating them from the background in order to achieve a three-dimensional look. The backlighting can be artificial or natural light. This can create a glowing effect on the edges of the subject to make the subject appear dreamlike.
Colours used in films are significant as it sets the tone and mood, evoking emotion from the viewers.
